Hats are probably my favorite thing to crochet, and this C2C beanie is no exception! I love the diagonal ombre fade of colors, and the faux fur pom on top totally finishes the piece. Keep reading for the free Glacial Beanie crochet pattern.

C2C Beanie - Not a Blanket!
When I think of C2C crochet, normally a blanket pops into my mind. But not anymore! Through some experimenting I’ve discovered that as much as I love a good C2C blanket, I think I love the stitch even more for a C2C beanie. I love the diagonal ombre fade that the C2C stitch creates with the Scarfie yarn, and the stitch itself offers some nice texture without being too rigid. I also love that the C2C stitch is a relatively mindless stitch, perfect for watching Netflix (or Disney+) and crocheting!

Yarn Substitutes for Scarfie Yarn
Ever since I started Seven Days of Scarfie, I’ve been asked a lot about yarn that can be substituted when Scarfie isn’t available or wool is an issue. The good news is that you can substitute almost any worsted weight yarn or light Category 5 yarn for this pattern! Since scarves aren’t particularly fitted you don’t even need to worry about gauge. Just add or subtract length as desired if your yarn is a different weight category. If you are looking for yarn similar to Lion Brand Scarfie yarn, check out my list of recommended substitutes here.

Sl st to the nearest corner of your rectangle. Tie off yarn leaving a long (18”+) tail. Fold your hat so that short edges are touching. Using a yarn needle and the yarn tail sew the short edge together.
Crocheting the Brim
Base Round: Attach your yarn (from the skein) near the seam you just sewed. ch 1, SC 68 sts evenly around the unfinished edge. Attach the last stitch of the round to the first st of the round with a sl st.
Starting where you ended your Base Round, ch 11 sts. In the second ch from the hook, SC in the remaining 10 ch stitches. When you get back to the beginning of the ch, sl st into the first st of the Base Round. This creates your first row of ribbing.
Row 2: sl st into the next st of the Base Round, ch 1, SC in BLO across to create your next row of ribbing. Turn. (10)
Row 3: ch 1, SC in BLO across. Sl st into the next open st of the Base Round. (10)
Row 4-68: Repeat Rows 2 (on even rows) and 3 (on odd rows) until you have gone around the entire base of the hat.
After completing Row 68: Working through the BLO of Row 68 and your starting chain, sl st across to seam the cuff together. sl st into the last st of the Base Round. Tie off yarn and weave in ends.
Closing the Top
Cut a long (18”+) length of yarn. With a yarn needle, weave the yarn back and forth along the unfinished edge. Use the yarn to cinch the top shut and tie it closed. Weave in all the ends. Attach a pom pom if desired.
