Every winter, I like to take some of my projects and leave them around town for random people to find, and the basic bulky ear warmer is a great project to do that with. I like to set a tag out with mine so that the finder knows they can keep it. Let me know if you try this, too!

Basic Bulky Ear Warmer - Free Crochet Pattern
Supplies:
- Loops and Threads Charisma (approx. 36 yards) or a comparable Category 5 Bulky yarn
- 6.5mm crochet hook (I used Clover Amour)
- Scissors - I always keep these travel scissors in my hook case
- Yarn needle
- 1 - 1 1/2” button
Abbreviations (written in U.S. terms):
- ch: chain
- SC: single crochet
- HDC: half double crochet
- HDC2Tog: half double crochet two together
Gauge
5 sts x 3 rows = 2” square in HDC
Finished Size:
Length: 21"
Width: 4.5"
Pattern Notes:
- ch stitches at the beginning of rows do not count as a stitch
- to adjust the length of the ear warmer, add or subtract rows between Rows 8-28
Matching Patterns
Instructions
ch 7
Row 1: HDC in the second ch from the hook and HDC across (6) Turn.
Row 2: ch 1, HDC in next two sts, ch 2, skip 2, HDC in last two sts (6) Turn.
Row 3-4: ch 1, HDC across (6) Turn.
Row 5: ch 1, 2 HDC in first st, HDC in next 4, 2 HDC in last st (8) Turn.
Row 6: ch 1, HDC across (8) Turn.
Row 7: ch 1, 2 HDC in first st, HDC in next 6, 2 HDC in last st (10) Turn.
Row 8-28: ch 1, HDC across (10) Turn.
Row 29: ch 1, HDC2Tog, HDC in next 6, HDC2Tog (8) Turn.
Row 30: ch 1, HDC across (8) Turn.
Row 31: ch 1, HDC2Tog, HDC in next 4, HDC2Tog (6) Turn.
Row 32-35: ch 1, HDC across (6) Turn.
Do not tie off at the end of Row 35. Ch 1 and SC around the outside edge of the ear warmer. When you reach the first SC of the border, attach with a slip stitch, tie off and weave in ends.
Sew a button on the ear warmer in desired location between Rows 32-35.
