Crochet Star Gazer's Slipper Socks - Free One Skein Pattern

The Star Gazer's Slipper Socks are perfect crochet pattern for snuggling up with a hot mug of tea on a cold winter day.  Keep reading for the free crochet pattern and the sixth pattern from my Seven Days of Scarfie 2017 collection.

Make Matching Star Gazer's Slipper Socks, Mittens and Cowl

Just like with the Star Gazer's Mittens, Scarfie yarn works up almost as a worsted weight yarn (even though the label states it is a Category 5 Bulky) in this slipper sock pattern.  These will keep your feet toasty warm, but remember to either wear them on carpet or to add some kind of anti-skid bottom if you plan on using them on hard flooring (I used fabric puffy paint which seemed to work well).  These slippers would make a lovely gift all by themselves, but they would also be super cute paired with the matching mittens and cowl!

Lion Brand Scarfie yarn is available at most stores that sell yarn and also online, but if you can't get your hands on it (or can't work with yarn that has wool in it) I would recommend substituting a Category 4 worsted/aran yarn for this pattern.  Definitely work up a gauge swatch to make sure you will still achieve the same size, but using another bulky yarn for this pattern probably wouldn't work out so well unless it is very similar to Scarfie yarn.

Star Gazer's Slipper Socks - Free Crochet Pattern

Supplies:

• One skein of Lion Brand Scarfie yarn (‘Charcoal/Magenta’ pictured) or approx. 150-160 yds. of a comparable yarn. I would recommend trying a Category 4 worsted weight yarn as a substitute but be sure to check the gauge.
• 5.0mm crochet hook (I use Clover Amour)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors - I always keep these travel scissors in my hook case

Abbreviations (written in U.S. terms):

• YO: yarn over hook
• LOH: loops on hook
• ch: chain
• SC: single crochet
• SC2Tog: single crochet two together
• HDC: half double crochet
• HDC2Tog: half double crochet two together

Special Stitch

First start stitch of a round: Ch 2, Insert hook into back loop of the second ch from the hook and pull up a loop (2 LOH), insert hook into front loop of the same ch stitch and pull up a loop (3 LOH), insert into the next 3 sts and pull up a loop through each one (6 LOH).  YO and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to make the "eye" of the star.

Star stitch: Insert hook into the "eye" of the previous star and pull up a loop (2 LOH), insert hook into the last post of the previous star and pull up a loop (3 LOH), insert your hook into the last stitch of the previous star and pull up a loop (4 LOH), insert hook into the next 2 sts and pull up a loop in each one (6 LOH).  YO and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to make the "eye of the star.

Gauge

14 HDC x 11 rows = 4” square in HDC

Finished Size:  

• Length (heel to toe, size small) = 8.5"
• Length (heel to toe, size medium) = 9"
• Length (heel to toe, size large) = 9.5"
• Width (laid flat) = 4.5"

Pattern Notes

• The chain stitches at the beginning of each round/row do not count as a stitch.
• The last stitch of each round is attached to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch
• I used a fairly tight tension for this project, please check your gauge so the slippers fit properly.
• If you are making these for more narrow feet, you can start with 9 HDC in the magic circle and increase accordingly per the pattern instructions. Round 2 would have 18 sts, and Round 3 would have 27 sts.
• Please be cautious wearing these on hard floors! They are slippery. I added puffy fabric paint to the bottom of mine to reduce the slip.

Instructions

Start with a magic circle

Round 1: ch 1, work 10 HDC into the magic circle, pull tight (10)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 HDC in each st around (20)

Round 3: ch 1, *2 HDC, HDC, repeat from * around (30)

(Small) Round 4-13: ch 1, HDC around (30)

(Medium) Round 4-15: ch 1, HDC around (30)

(Large) Round 4-17: ch 1, HDC around (30)

**This section of the slipper should cover your foot up to your ankle (it is ok if it has to stretch just a little bit to do so).  You will now start working back and forth in rows.**

Row 1-7: ch 1, HDC in 18 sts (18) Turn.

Row 8: ch 1, *HDC2Tog, HDC, repeat from * across (12).  Turn.

Row 9: ch 1, HDC2Tog across (6).  Turn

Row 10: ch 1, HDC2Tog across (3).  Turn

**Do not cut your yarn.  You will now be working in rounds around the ankle portion of the slipper**

Round 1: ch 1, HDC evenly around the ankle opening so that you have 44 stitches around (44)

Round 2: ch 1, *SC2Tog, SC in next 9 sts, repeat from * around (40)

Round 3: ch 2, make the first star stitch of the round and continue with star stitches around. When you reach the end of the round, HDC in the last st of the round (19 stars + 1 HDC)

Round 4: ch 1, work 2 SC into each "eye" of the star stitches from the previous round (38).  You will intentionally skip crocheting into the last HDC of the previous round.  Attach to the first SC of the round with a sl st.  Tie off yarn and weave in ends.
