Crochet Mittens as Part of a Matching Set
Who has been battling lots of snow recently? I know we have! The Snow Drops Mittens pattern will complete my Snow Drops Crochet Pattern Collection. Because, let's be honest, if it has to be THIS cold and THIS snowy - we at least want to be able to wear something pretty, right? I wrote the Snow Drops Mittens pattern to match my Snow Drops Mod Scarf and Snow Drops Slouch Hat, and you will only need two cakes of your favorite Caron Cakes yarn to make all three! If you have never crocheted mittens before, don't be intimidated! Mittens are much easier than they look. This pattern uses my basic method of mitten construction while incorporating the incredible texture provided by the star stitch.
As you can see from the photo above, I did not control where my color changes happened for my mittens, but that doesn't mean you can't! Feel free to cut your colors separately and spread the rounds out evenly so the mittens will match. Or use any of your favorite worsted weight yarn to make these.

Snow Drops Mittens - Free Crochet Pattern
Supplies:
- Caron Cakes yarn (‘Faerie Cake’ pictured) or approx. 145 yards of a comparable worsted weight yarn
- H/5.0mm crochet hook - I use Clover Amour
- Scissors - I always keep these travel scissors in my hook case
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations (written in U.S. terms):
- sl st: slip stitch
- ch: chain
- BLO/FLO: back loop only/front loop only
- SC: single crochet
- HDC: half double crochet
Gauge
8 sts x 6 rows = 2” square in HDC
Finished Size:
- Tip of fingers to bottom of wrist = 10"
- Width of finger section = 3.75"
- Width of wrist = 3.5"
- Length of thumb = 2.5"
- Width of thumb = 1.5"
Special Stitch
First star stitch of a round: (you will have already ch 2 to start your new round) Insert hook into back loop of the second ch from the hook and pull up a loop (2 LOH), insert hook into front loop of the same ch stitch and pull up a loop (3 LOH), insert into the next 3 sts and pull up a loop through each one (6 LOH). YO and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to make the "eye" of the star.
Star stitch: Insert hook into the "eye" of the previous star and pull up a loop (2 LOH), insert hook into the last post of the previous star and pull up a loop (3 LOH), insert your hook into the last stitch of the previous star and pull up a loop (4 LOH), insert hook into the next 2 sts and pull up a loop in each one (6 LOH). YO and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to make the “eye" of the star.

Pattern Notes
- The chain stitches at the beginning of each round do not count as a stitch.
- The last stitch of each round is attached to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch.
- This pattern is written to fit an average adult woman.
- I used a fairly tight tension for this project, please check your gauge so the mittens fit properly.
- Thumb size can be adjusted by changing the number of stitches you start with (try to keep it an even number). Length can be adjusted by adding/subtracting rounds as needed.
- Because the Star Stitch does show a seam, I have written this pattern as two separate mittens. They are not designated “right” or “left” because that will change based on whether you are crocheting right or left handed. Just make sure to make one of each. The seam is intended to be on the palm side of the hand when turned right side out.

Start with a magic circle
Round 1: Ch 1, work 10 HDC into magic circle, pull tight (10)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 HDC in each stitch around (20)
Round 3: Ch 1, *2 HDC, HDC, repeat from * 9 times, HDC in last two stitches of the round (29)
Round 4-6: Ch 1, HDC around (29)
Round 7: Ch 2, make the first star stitch of the round and continue with star stitches around. When you reach the end of the round, HDC in the last st of the round (this will have already been worked into by the previous star stitch) (14 stars + 1 HDC).

Making the cuff (see photos below):
Starting where you ended Round 23, ch 9 sts. In the second chain from the hook, SC in the remaining 8 ch stitches. When you get back to the beginning of the ch, sl st into the first st of Round 23. This creates your first row of ribbing.
Row 2: sl st into the next st of Round 23, ch 1, SC in BLO across to create your next row of ribbing. Turn. (8)
Row 3: ch 1, SC in BLO across. Sl st into the next open st of Round 23. (8)
Row 4-26: Repeat Rows 2 (on even rows) and 3 (on odd rows) until you have gone around the entire base of the mitten.
After completing Row 26: Working through the BLO of Row 26 and the FLO of your starting chain, sl st across to seam the cuff together. sl st into the last st of Round 23. Tie off yarn and weave in ends. Continue on to complete the thumb.
Crochet Ribbing (shown from a left-handed perspective)
Attaching the Thumb:
Round 1: Attach yarn into the thumb hole with a sl st. Ch 1, and work 12 HDC around the thumb hole. Some stitches may be worked into "non traditional" spaces such as stitch posts to achieve this number. (12)
Round 2-6: Ch 1, HDC around (12)
Round 7: Ch 1, HDC2tog around (6)
Cut and tie yarn leaving a long tail. Using a yarn needle, weave through every other stitch around the top. Pull to cinch the thumb shut and tie off. Weave in all ends.
