This year I decided to celebrate Valentine's Day with another cute Stuff and Spill crochet baby toy for my daughter. Keep reading for the free crochet pattern.

She has so much fun with these toys, and now that she is two they are great for pretend play! This pattern makes a great toy for babies and toddlers or even as a cute decoration. I always embellish my Stuff and Spill patterns with non-toxic puffy paint so that they are truly "baby friendly".

- M/N 9.0 mm crochet hook (I use Clover Amour)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors (I always keep these travel scissors in my hook case)
- Non-toxic puffy paint in black and white (optional)
Abbreviations
- St: stitch
- Sl st: slip stitch
- Ch: Chain
- SC: Single crochet
- SC2TOG: Single crochet two together
- HDC: Half double crochet
- DC: Double crochet
- Tr: Treble crochet
- BLO: back loop only
Pattern Notes:
- Ch stitches at the beginning of rows do not count as a stitch
- Gauge is not important for the finished product. My mailbox is about 10 inches long and 5 inches tall.
- To make these truly baby friendly, I opted to use non-toxic puffy paint instead of safety eyes
Instructions
Mailbox (Dark Grey)
ch 21
Row 1: HDC in second ch from the hook and HDC across (20)
Row 2-9: Ch 1, HDC across (20)
Row 10: ch 1, SC in BLO across (20)
Row 11-35: ch 1, SC across (20)
When you get to the end of row 35, join it to Row 1 by sl stitching the rows together (essentially making a seam). Do NOT cut and tie off your yarn. Continue to Row 1 of the mailbox door.
Mailbox Door (Dark Grey)
Row 1: ch 1, work 12 SC across the flat bottom portion of the front of the mailbox (you will be making the "hinged" door)
Row 2: ch 1, SC in BLO across (12)
Row 3-5: ch 1, SC across (12)
Row 6: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 8, SC2TOG (10)
Row 7: ch 1, SC across (10)
Row 8: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 6, SC2TOG (8)
Row 9: ch 1, SC across (8)
Row 10: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 4, SC2TOG (6)
Row 11: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 2, SC2TOG (4)
To finish the edges, ch 1 and SC around the edge of the door and the entire opening of the front of the mailbox. Make sure to leave some slack where the door "hinges" so that it can open and shut.
Back of Mailbox (Dark Grey)
ch 13
Row 1: SC in second ch from the hook and SC across (12)
Row 2-4: ch 1, SC across (12)
Row 5: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 8, SC2TOG (10)
Row 6: ch 1, SC across (10)
Row 7: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 6, SC2TOG (8)
Row 8: ch 1, SC across (8)
Row 9: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 4, SC2TOG (6)
Row 10: ch 1, SC2TOG, SC in 2, SC2TOG (4). Do not tie off your yarn.
Place this piece at the back of the mailbox lined up so that the flat side of the piece is at the bottom of the mailbox (pictured). continue to SC around through both the back piece and the mailbox so that you seam them together. When you reach the beginning, sl st to the first SC and tie off.
Mailbox Flag (Racecar Red)
ch 5
Row 1: SC in the second ch from the hook and SC across (4)
Row 2: ch 1, SC across (4)
ch 1 and SC around the outside of the rectangle that you just created (this is the top of the flag). Sl st to the first stitch of the edging after crocheting around the outside. Do not tie off.
To make the "post" of the flag, ch 5, SC in second ch from the hook and across the rest of the ch sts. When you reach the point where the post and the flag meet, sl st back into the first st of the flag edging and tie off. Leave a long tail.
Use the tail to sew the flag onto the mailbox as pictured.
Heart (I made two in Pixie Pink and one in Lilac)
ch 3
Row 1: SC in second ch from the hook and SC across (2)
Row 2: ch 1, 2 SC in each st (4)
Row 3: ch 1, 2 SC in first st, SC in next two, 2 SC in last st (6)
Row 4: ch 1, 2 SC in first st, SC in next four, 2 SC in last st (8)
Row 5: ch 1, 2 SC in first st, SC in next six, 2 SC in last st (10)
Row 6-7: ch 1, SC across (10)
Row 8: ch 2, DC, Tr, Tr, DC, sl st in two, DC, Tr, Tr, DC (10)
To finish: ch 1 and SC around the raw edge of rows 1-7 (just the bottom portion of the heart). To make the pink heart stuffie, I sewed two hearts together and left the middle hollow. To make the "candy" conversation heart I just made one heart and then used a little bit of white yarn to surface sl st around the outside of it. Embellish with puffy paint as desired.
Envelope (Vintage White, make 2)
ch 13
Row 1: SC in the second ch from the hook and SC across (12)
Row 2-8: ch 1, SC across (12)
To finish: ch 1 and SC around the outside of the rectangle. Decorate one side with an embroidered heart. When you have finished two, lay one on top of the other and sew them together. This will add some stiffness to your letter as well as hide the back side of your embroidery. Add lines with puffy paint to make it look like an envelope. You could also address the front side as well.
