Crochet Forest Animal Block - Free Pattern

If you've been following along with me all week, you have seen my recent Grids for Kids crochet block project.  If you haven't, make sure you check out the free patterns for my Fox, Bear, Raccoon, and Owl squares!  In this post I'm going to show you how I put these squares together to make a giant pillow block perfect for babies.

These squares could, of course, be used as blanket squares as well!  They measure approximately 8" x 8".  But the block is a bit unique and my toddler still loves playing with her Original Grids for Kids ABC blocks - so aside from my Crochet Water Balloons this is one of the most used crocheted items in my house 🙂

PLUS if you make these into squares there is no need to weave in any ends.  That right there is a deal breaker for me 😉  I'll be honest, I always have a tough time getting good photos of these blocks...I don't think they do the finished product justice.  But in my house they are well loved, and I think they make awesome baby gifts!  In fact this one is headed on a road trip with me next week for just that purpose.  Hopefully baby's mom hasn't been following this post thread!

  • A crochet raccoon square

Supplies:

  • 6 Grids for Kids squares (I used my Forest Friends patterns and baby's initials from my ABC blocks, but any of my Grids for Kids patterns can be combined as they are all the same size!)
  • A small amount of white worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn)
  • H/5.0mm crochet hook (I use Clover Amour)
  • Scissors (I always keep these travel scissors in my hook case)
  • Yarn needle

Finished Size

Each block square is approx. 8" x 8" (may vary depending on your tension).  The assembled block will measure slightly larger than 8" x 8" x 8" depending on your tension and how much you stuff it.

Assembly Instructions

Watch the video below to see how I assemble my Grids for Kids Blocks

Now you have a totally unique baby gift ready to go!  I can't wait to see what combinations you use for your blocks!
