Crochet Father's Day Gift the Kids Can Help With

So I have to take a moment to talk about my husband.  We have been married for almost 4 years, and he is (fortunately) one of my favorite people!  He is kind and funny and a wonderful father.  And so it is with great affection that I can also say that he is a big nerd!  Don't worry-he would also agree with this statement.

Truth be told, I am also some kind of nerd...maybe not the same "brand" that he is, but I definitely have my quirks (doesn't everybody?).  So what happens when two nerds fall in love and have a baby girl?  This Father's Day present:

Now I can't take credit for the Periodic Table "Dad" idea.  I got the idea from a T-shirt I found on Amazon.

I LOVE the shirt, but my husband and I have a tradition of making each other gifts, and I got a pretty incredible Mother's Day card that I have to live up to this year!  So I decided to use the idea from the shirt and design it in crochet instead.  This project works up very quickly!  Here is a break down of the pattern:

Supplies:

  • Black and White worsted weight yarn (I used Vanna's Choice)
  • Cardstock or white paper (for the background)
  • A triple 4" x 6" frame with the mat removed (I used this Studio Decor frame from Michaels)
  • Plastic yarn needle (I used Susan Bates)
  • F Hook - 3.75 mm (I used Clover Amour)

Pattern notes:

  • The numbers on the squares are just hand stitched using a single strand of black yarn

Video Tutorial:

Instructions:

  • Make 2 white rectangles: Chain 22, turn and SC across (21). Continue rows of SC until you have 29 rows. SC around the edge of the square in white, and then SC around the edge in black.
  • Use the following pixel graphs to cross stitch the letters on the rectangles using a single strand of black yarn

  • Stitch the numbers 24 and 7 on the 'Da' rectangle. Stitch the numbers 3 and 65 on the 'D' rectangle.
  • Cut your white paper to the size of the frame. I let my daughter color on the paper so she could contribute to the gift the best way that a one-year old can 🙂
  • Open the frame, remove the mat, and arrange your rectangles so that they are centered. Place the white (or colored) paper behind them and put the back of the frame on.

That's it!  It's a really fast and cute project that the kiddos can help with, and, at least for my husband, I know it will be very much appreciated!  Anyone else out there have unique Father's Day gift ideas?  Please leave them in the comments below!  I'd love to collect some for the coming years!
