Crochet a Scrapghan with Cake Yarn From Your Stash
My inspiration for this pattern was pretty simple. One - my office is freezing and I wanted a blanket! Two - I may have a slight Caron Cakes yarn problem 😉 I vowed to myself this year to use up more yarn from my stash, and that means using quite a few Caron Cakes as well! Last Christmas I made the Holly Jolly Christmas Tree Skirt with some, and now I’ve used up more with this fun and eclectic Cake Yarn Scrapghan.

Herringbone Half Double Crochet in the Round
When I came up with the idea for this blanket, I knew I wanted to keep the stitch work pretty simple. The colors provide enough visual interest by themselves! But I also (always) want some texture in my projects. So I decided to work the herringbone half double crochet in the round. It’s a stitch with a little extra squish, and it creates a really nice texture whether you are using multiple colors or solids.

Caron Cakes, Mandala, Bernat Pop - oh my!
Cake yarn isn’t hard to come by these days, and the good news is that this pattern can be made with any cake yarn you want. The blocks of color changes (along with alternating colorways every few rows) gives this blanket a genuine “scrapghan” look without all those ends to weave in. Just pick a variety of different colorways that complement each other (or not!), start crocheting and see what happens! Part of the fun is not knowing exactly how the finished blanket will look in the end. Of course if you aren’t in the mood for a surprise, this blanket would look lovely in a solid color or with planned striping.

- Chain stitches at the beginning of rows do not count as a stitch
- Your stitch count will increase by 2 on each side of your square/rectangle with each round you add. You can make this blanket any size you want.
- This stitch is worked in turning rounds to achieve the herringbone stitch effect. If you work in regular rounds the stitch will not look the same.
- To construct this blanket as a “scrapghan”, please refer to chart to see where I changed my colors.

Instructions
Start with a magic circle
Round 1: ch 2, 2 HHDC, ch 2, 4 HHDC, ch 2, 2 HHDC, ch 2, 4 HHDC, ch 2, sl st to first st of the round. Pull magic circle tight. Turn.
Round 2: ch 2, *(HHDC, ch 2, HHDC) in the ch 2 corner, HHDC along the next edge, repeat from * around. Sl st to the first st of your round. Turn.
Round 3-68: ch 2, HHDC to the first ch 2 corner, (HHDC, ch 2, HHDC) in the corner, *HHDC along the next edge, (HHDC, ch 2, HHDC) in the corner, continue from * until you reach the last corner. HHDC across the last side until you reach the first st of your round. Sl st to the first st of your round. Turn.
You can continue adding rounds to this blanket until it reaches your desired size. The size I made mine is a nice throw size perfect for curling up with in a chair. When you are done, weave in all ends.
